2025 Synod Fall Gathering Report

The women of the Central/Southern Illinois Synod joined at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Champaign for the Fall Gathering of the Women of the ELCA (WELCA) on Saturday, Sept. 20. The theme for the Gathering was “My Cup Overflows,” which comes from Psalm 23 and the book “The Cup of Our Life” by Joyce Rupp.

It’s been several years since a WELCA event was held in the East Central Conference; we were very happy to have 76 people attend. Pastor Amy Ziettlow, Assistant to the Bishop, shared her bright and caring energy as the event’s program and worship leader. We’re grateful to Pastor Lynette Chapman and the women of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for hosting and making everyone to feel so welcome. Breakfast and lunch were delicious and there were plenty of shopping opportunities at the silent auction and Fair Trade tables.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
— Psalm 23:5 (NRSVUE)

In the morning, Pastor Amy, led an activity used during the 2025 Synod Assembly. We each picked a partner, listened to each other’s stories, and listened for God’s activity. This provided an opportunity and framework to share an experience when we felt spiritually engaged and what we think God was telling or showing us. I paired up with friend but found that in sharing my story and listening to hers I came to understand and appreciate her in a way I hadn’t before. I felt uplifted and thankful for the care and attention that God provides.

Later in the day, Pastor Amy guided us in prayer activities using “The Cup of Our Life” daily meditations. Each person had a cup, which served as a metaphor for our lives and our spiritual journeys. Pastor Amy led various lessons with our cups, which helped us learn about ourselves and how to strengthen our relationship with God.

Throughout the day and during worship, the wonderful music and hymn-singing kept our spiritual cups overflowing with good feelings. Guest speakers shared the good work provided to our communities by ELCA-affiliated organizations, including Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, Thrivent Financial, and the food pantries at Grace and Good Shepherd Lutheran Churches of Champaign.

Pastor Jon Fry talked about his work with students and young adults at St. Andrew’s Campus Ministry at the University of Illinois. Their new, modern building is almost complete, and they hope to move in the next few months. Pastor Frye shared pictures and plans to use the new St. Andrew’s for worship and as a gathering place. There people will feel welcome to meet and talk, drink coffee, study, organize activities, hold bible studies and eat weekly meals together as a community.

Pat Caley, President of the WELCA Board for the Central/Southern Illinois Synod, gave an update about WELCA activities and guidelines to forming a WELCA unit in your congregation. She also encouraged everyone to attend the WELCA Triennial Gathering, July 16-19, 2026 in Des Moines, Iowa. This will be a great opportunity to experience an inspiring national WELCA event without having to take a plane. I hope to see you there!
